Meta accused of breaking law by charging for ad-free social networks

Meta platform inc. has been slapped with a warning over its subscription model for ad-free services on apps like Instagram and facebook. The regulators at EU announced that the so called ad free campaign goes against the EU’s Digital Markets Act as it forces consumers to give their consent to meta for retrieving their data, but consumers not getting personalised service.

“We want to empower citizens to be able to take control over their own data and choose a less personalised ads experience” said Margerethe Vesteger, the european Commission's antitrust chief.

The EU regulator’s warning comes just a week after it issued a similar complaint against Apple's DMA compliance. It warnes apple that it must allow app developers to steer users to cheaper deals and offers outside of the App Store in order to be in line with the rules.

This is because as per rules, big tech companies like Meta, Apple, Alphabet inc., are barred from combining data they collect of the users across different platforms. These rules also prohibit companies from using data they collect from third party merchants to compete against the, and have to allow users to download apps from rival platforms.
